Childbirth and Postpartum Professionals Association (CAPPA) will be hosting Two Part 16 hour training
for participants wishing to acquire skills to serve childbearing families during pregnancy, labor, and/or
early postpartum. The entire workshop is a requirement for birth workers seeking CAPPA Certification as
a Labor Doula. Day Two is a Comfort Measures Skills Workshop.

DAY ONE: Labor Doula Foundation
1. Encourage their families to take education courses for childbirth, parenting, and breastfeeding.
2. Practice strategies that enhance communication between the family and their care providers.
3. Empower and care for the chosen labor support team to most effectively serve the birth mother.
4. Provide anticipatory guidance for families as they journey through their birth experience.
5. Enhance the early postpartum experience and promote bonding and parenting skills for the
family directly providing care for the newborn.
6. Competently assist the new mother with those first breastfeeding experiences as soon as
reasonably possible after the birth of her baby.
7. Discern the Labor Doula’s scope of practice in caring for the childbearing family.
8. Reflect upon unbiased, empowering care that is unique to each mother and her birth story.
On Day TWO: Comfort Measures Workshop
1. Identify and assimilate the characteristics of the fear/tension/pain cycle which is the
basis for all labor support techniques.
2. Promote relaxation through breath awareness, coaching with imagery, and massage.
3. Identify and master upright postures that provide comfort, optimal fetal positioning and descent.
4. Examine and experiment with effective strategies for caring for women with back labor and
maximizing their comfort.
5. Work with helpful birth tools such as birthing balls, squat bars, cold/hot compresses, and use of
sheets and pillows with the birthing family.
6. Observe and demonstrate labor support techniques for the family facing medical interventions.
7. Review and practice support techniques for the pushing family.
8. Focus on providing support for the entire family in order to promote parenting skills, confidence,
and teamwork in caring for the newborn.
9. Note and perform support skills to encourage and assist families to use hydrotherapy techniques
whenever possible.
10. Study and discuss the phenomenal importance of skin to skin contact between mother and baby
as soon as possible.
Participants will earn 15 CAPPA Contact Hours for the entire workshop.

Jacqueline has been a practicing Childbirth Educator and Labor Doula since 1997. Throughout
the years, she has taught in homes, hospitals, and pediatrician’s offices. In 2007, after working
in many community outreach programs to promote women’s wellness, Jacqueline was honored to
be inducted as a Fellow into the American College of Childbirth Educators (FACCE). Currently
Jacqueline is a Breastfeeding Nurse assisting, educating, empowering women after their birth as
they learn to breastfeed their baby.
Jacqueline’s classes model best teaching practices that honor the values and needs of adult
learners. Practical outlines, best practice teaching strategies, low stress interactive sessions are
all available to the adult learner wishing to plant seeds of change, courage, and awareness of
best birth practices in her community!
